How it works
Calories burned ≈ MET × weight in kg × time in hours.
A MET (metabolic equivalent) compares an activity with sitting quietly, which is 1 MET (about 1 kcal per kg of body weight per hour). Brisk walking is about 4.3 MET, so it uses about 4.3 times the energy of sitting.
MET values come from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth and colleagues), a widely used research list of activities and their typical energy cost in adults.
Example: brisk walking (4.3 MET) for 30 minutes at 70 kg gives 4.3 × 70 × 0.5 ≈ 150 kcal. In pounds, the calculator first converts to kg (1 lb = 0.4536 kg).

Frequently asked questions
How many calories does 30 minutes of brisk walking burn?
Roughly 4.3 × your weight in kg × 0.5. For a 70 kg adult that is about 150 kcal, and for a 60 kg adult about 130 kcal. The real figure depends on your pace, the slope and your fitness.
Why does my smartwatch show a different number?
Watches use their own formulas, often with your heart rate, and many show only "active" calories that leave out the energy you would have used anyway at rest. This calculator gives the total for that time. Both are estimates.
Is this accurate for children or older adults?
MET values were collected mainly in adults. Children and many older adults use energy differently, so treat the result as a rough guide only.
How many calories do I need to burn to lose weight?
Weight loss depends on food intake as well as activity. A daily deficit of about 500 kcal, from eating a little less and moving a little more, gives about 0.5 kg a week for many adults. The daily calorie calculator can help you plan.
