How it works
For adults, a resting heart rate of 60 to 100 beats per minute (bpm) is usually called normal (American Heart Association). Fit people may have 40 to 60 if they feel well.
Children have faster heart rates. Usual resting ranges used here: babies 1 to 11 months 80 to 160, children 1 to 5 years 80 to 130, 6 to 12 years 70 to 115, teenagers 60 to 100 (based on MedlinePlus / NIH resting ranges). Heart rates are lower during sleep.
For adults and teenagers: above 120 at rest, or below 50 with dizziness or fainting, means see a doctor urgently. For children, a rate outside the range after resting means contact a doctor.
Chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness is an emergency at any heart rate.

What heart rate is dangerous?
A resting rate above 120, or below 50 with dizziness or fainting, should be checked by a doctor urgently. Chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness at any rate is an emergency: call your local emergency number (India: 108 or 112).

Watches are usually close at rest but can be off during exercise or with an irregular heartbeat. If a reading worries you, check your pulse by hand for 60 seconds and see a doctor.
