How it works

The checker uses the 2017 American College of Cardiology / American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) blood pressure categories for adults.

Normal: systolic below 120 and diastolic below 80. Elevated: systolic 120 to 129 and diastolic below 80. Stage 1: systolic 130 to 139 or diastolic 80 to 89. Stage 2: systolic 140 or higher or diastolic 90 or higher. Hypertensive crisis: systolic higher than 180 and/or diastolic higher than 120.

When the two numbers fall in different categories, the higher category is used. For example, 120/80 is stage 1 because the diastolic is 80.

A note about low blood pressure is added when the reading is below 90/60. The ACC/AHA categories do not include a low category.

Not a diagnosis. This tool gives a general estimate from a standard published formula. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace a check-up by a qualified doctor. If you feel very unwell, call your local emergency number (India: 108 or 112).

Frequently asked questions

Is 120/80 normal blood pressure?

Under the ACC/AHA 2017 guideline, normal is below 120/80. A reading of exactly 120/80 falls in stage 1, because a diastolic of 80 is in the 80 to 89 range. Some other guidelines, including many used in India, use 140/90 as the threshold for treatment, so talk to your doctor about your own target.

Which number matters more, systolic or diastolic?

Both matter. The category is set by whichever number is higher. In people over about 50, a high systolic number is a particularly important risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

Can one high reading mean I have hypertension?

No. Blood pressure changes through the day. A diagnosis needs several readings on different days, or home or 24-hour monitoring, checked by a doctor. A reading above 180/120 needs urgent care.

What should I do if my blood pressure is above 180/120?

Seek emergency care now and call your local emergency number (India: 108 or 112), especially if you have chest pain, breathlessness, weakness, vision changes or difficulty speaking.
