Sudden weight gain: causes, warning signs & what to do
Written & medically reviewed by Dr. Sanjay Anbu, MBBS · Last reviewed
Medically reviewedGaining weight quickly — over days or weeks — is often fluid, not fat. That fluid can come from the heart, kidneys or liver, so rapid unexplained weight gain should be checked.
Possible causes
Common causes of sudden weight gain
- Fluid retention from heart failure — with ankle swelling and breathlessness
- Kidney problems such as nephrotic syndrome — puffy eyes and foamy urine
- Underactive thyroid
- PCOS — weight gain with irregular periods and acne
- Cushing’s syndrome or steroid medicines — weight on the face and tummy
- Pregnancy, menopause, stopping smoking, poor sleep or some medicines

What you can do now

- If you have heart failure, follow the weight limit your doctor gave you for calling them

Frequently asked questions
Why am I suddenly gaining weight?
Rapid weight gain is often fluid from heart, kidney or liver problems, or due to medicines, thyroid or hormone changes. A doctor can check with an exam and simple tests.
Can thyroid problems cause weight gain?
An underactive thyroid can cause modest weight gain with tiredness, feeling cold and constipation. A TSH test checks it.
How can I tell if it is fluid or fat?
Fluid tends to come on quickly and causes swelling, for example in the ankles that leaves a dent when pressed. Fat gain is usually slower.
