FSH & LH Hormone Tests: normal range & what your result means

Written & medically reviewed by Dr. Sanjay Anbu, MBBS · Last reviewed

Medically reviewed

FSH and LH are hormones from the pituitary gland that control the ovaries and testes. Their levels change through the menstrual cycle, so timing of the test matters.

About the test

Why the FSH and LH test is done

  • Irregular or absent periods, and suspected PCOS
  • Infertility in women or men
  • Checking for menopause or early menopause
  • Low testosterone or delayed puberty

Reference range

Typical adult range

MeasureTypical adult range
FSH, women (early cycle)About 3–10 IU/L
FSH, after menopauseUsually above 25–30 IU/L
FSH, menAbout 1.5–12.4 IU/L
LH, women (early cycle)About 2–12 IU/L

Typical adult range; labs differ — use the range on your report. Ranges also vary with age, sex, pregnancy and the method used. Your doctor interprets the result alongside your symptoms and history.

  • Pituitary or hypothalamus problems
  • Very low body weight, intense exercise or stress
  • High prolactin, or hormone medicines

Frequently asked questions

What does high FSH mean?

In women it often means the ovaries are less responsive, as in menopause or reduced ovarian reserve. In men it can point to a testicular problem.

What is the LH:FSH ratio in PCOS?

Some women with PCOS have LH higher than FSH, but many do not. PCOS is diagnosed from symptoms, ultrasound and other tests, not this ratio alone.

Which day of the cycle should FSH be tested?

Usually on day 2 to 5 of the period, counting the first day of bleeding as day 1. Your doctor may ask for a different day.
