AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) Test: normal range & what your result means

Written & medically reviewed by Dr. Sanjay Anbu, MBBS · Last reviewed

Medically reviewed

AMH is a hormone made by the small follicles in the ovaries. It gives an estimate of ovarian reserve — how many eggs remain — but it does not on its own predict whether you can get pregnant naturally.

About the test

Why the AMH test is done

  • Fertility assessment and planning IVF
  • Suspected PCOS, where AMH is often high
  • Estimating ovarian reserve before treatments that may affect the ovaries

Reference range

Typical adult range

MeasureTypical adult range
Typical, reproductive ageAbout 1.0–4.0 ng/mL
LowerBelow about 1.0 ng/mL
HigherAbove about 4.0 ng/mL
Unit note1 ng/mL ≈ 7.14 pmol/L

Typical adult range; labs differ — use the range on your report. Ranges also vary with age, sex, pregnancy and the method used. Your doctor interprets the result alongside your symptoms and history.

Results

What a HIGH result can mean

  • Often seen in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Younger women naturally have higher levels
  • Rarely, certain ovarian tumours

Results

What a LOW result can mean

  • Reduced ovarian reserve — fewer eggs remaining, which is normal with age
  • After ovarian surgery, chemotherapy, or approaching menopause
  • Low AMH does not mean you cannot conceive — many women with low AMH get pregnant

Preparation

Before the test

  • Can usually be done on any day of the cycle
  • Hormonal contraception can lower AMH a little — tell your doctor

Red flags

When to get urgent help

  • Severe pelvic pain, fainting or heavy bleeding — seek urgent care
  • No periods for three months or more (and not pregnant)

Frequently asked questions

What is a good AMH level for my age?

AMH falls naturally with age, so a "normal" value depends on age and the lab. Your doctor compares your result with age-based ranges.

Can I get pregnant with low AMH?

Yes. AMH reflects egg quantity, not egg quality, and many women with low AMH conceive. It helps plan treatment timing.

Why is AMH high in PCOS?

Women with PCOS have many small follicles, each making AMH, so levels are often higher than average.
