Body ache: causes, warning signs & what to do
Written & medically reviewed by Dr. Sanjay Anbu, MBBS · Last reviewed
Medically reviewedA general ache in the muscles and joints is one of the commonest complaints, and usually comes with a viral fever. When it lasts for weeks without fever, a few simple tests can find a cause.
Possible causes
Common causes of body ache
- Viral fever and flu — aches usually settle within a few days
- Dengue or chikungunya — severe body and joint pain with high fever, common in the monsoon
- Low vitamin D — vague aches in bones and muscles, very common in India
- Underactive thyroid — aches, tiredness, weight gain and feeling cold
- Fibromyalgia — widespread pain with poor sleep and tiredness
- Overexertion, poor sleep, stress or dehydration
Self-care
What you can do now
- Rest, drink enough fluids and eat light, regular meals
- A warm bath or gentle stretching can ease muscle soreness
- Ask a pharmacist or doctor before taking painkillers — some are unsafe in dengue
- Note your temperature twice a day if you also have fever
Red flags
When to see a doctor urgently
- Fever with bleeding gums, black stools, severe stomach pain or persistent vomiting (possible severe dengue) — go to hospital now
- Body ache with a stiff neck, confusion or a rash that does not fade when pressed — call your local emergency number
- Dark, cola-coloured urine with severe muscle pain after heavy exercise or injury
- Aches lasting more than 2–3 weeks, or with weight loss or night sweats

Frequently asked questions
Why does my whole body ache without fever?
Common reasons are poor sleep, stress, overexertion, low vitamin D or an underactive thyroid. If it lasts more than a couple of weeks, a doctor may check simple blood tests.
Is body ache a sign of dengue?
Severe body and joint pain with sudden high fever is typical of dengue, especially in the monsoon. A doctor can order a dengue test and platelet count.
Can low vitamin D cause body pain?
Yes. Low vitamin D can cause aching bones and muscles and weakness. It is common in India despite sunshine and is easy to test.
