Anxiety vs Depression

Anxiety vs depression: differences in symptoms, tests and treatment

Written & medically reviewed by Dr. Sanjay Anbu, MBBS · Last reviewed

Medically reviewed
Short answer

Anxiety is mainly about excessive worry, fear and feeling on edge, often with physical symptoms like a racing heart. Depression is mainly a persistent low mood or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, lasting at least two weeks. They often occur together, both are common and treatable, and help from a doctor or counsellor works.

How doctors tell them apart

  • Core feature: fear and worry (anxiety) vs low mood and loss of interest (depression).
  • Doctors ask about how long symptoms have lasted and how they affect daily life.
  • Screening questionnaires help, but are not a diagnosis on their own.
  • Physical causes such as thyroid disease, anaemia or B12 deficiency are checked when relevant.
  • Many people have both, and treatment can help both together.

See a doctor urgently if

  • Thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life: call Tele MANAS 14416 or 1-800-891-4416, or emergency 112
  • Not eating or drinking, or unable to look after yourself
  • Hearing voices or believing things others say are not true
  • Chest pain or breathlessness during a panic attack (check the heart first)
  • Heavy alcohol or drug use to cope

In an emergency, call your local emergency number (in India: 108 or 112).

Frequently asked questions

Can you have anxiety and depression at the same time?

Yes, it is very common. Treatment such as CBT often helps both.

Is depression just sadness?

No. Depression lasts at least two weeks, affects sleep, energy and interest, and makes daily life harder. It is a health condition, not a weakness.

Are medicines for anxiety and depression addictive?

Many commonly prescribed ones are not habit-forming, but some are. Discuss benefits and side effects with your doctor and do not stop suddenly.

Where can I get help in India?

You can speak to your doctor, a psychiatrist or psychologist, or call Tele MANAS, the free national mental health helpline, on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416.
