Bronchitis vs Pneumonia

Bronchitis vs pneumonia: differences in symptoms, tests and treatment

Medically reviewed
Short answer

Acute bronchitis is inflammation of the breathing tubes, usually from a virus, and mainly causes a cough that can last up to three weeks. Pneumonia is an infection of the lung air sacs and is usually more serious, with higher fever, breathlessness and sometimes chest pain. A doctor can tell them apart by examining the chest and, if needed, a chest X-ray.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need antibiotics for bronchitis?

Usually not. Most acute bronchitis is viral. Antibiotics do not help viruses and can cause side effects.

Can bronchitis turn into pneumonia?

It can, especially in older adults and people with lung or heart disease. Rising fever or breathlessness are signs to get checked.

Why does my cough last so long after bronchitis?

The airways stay irritated for a while after the infection clears. A cough lasting more than 3 weeks should be checked, including for TB in India.

Is bronchitis contagious?

The viruses that cause it can spread. Cover coughs and wash hands.
