- Jaw joint (TMJ) problems — clicking, pain chewing or opening wide
- Sinusitis — upper jaw and cheek pain
- Trigeminal neuralgia — sudden, electric-shock-like facial pain
- Heart pain spreading to the jaw

Frequently asked questions
Can jaw pain be a sign of a heart attack?
Yes, occasionally — especially in women, older people and those with diabetes. Jaw pain with chest discomfort, sweating or breathlessness needs emergency care.
Why does my jaw hurt when I chew?
Tooth problems, jaw joint strain and tight chewing muscles from clenching are the usual causes. A dentist can check both teeth and joint.
What causes jaw clicking?
Clicking usually comes from the jaw joint and is often harmless. If it is painful or the jaw locks, see a dentist or doctor.
