Mumps
Mumps is a viral infection best known for causing painful swelling of the salivary glands near the jaw. It is preventable with the MMR vaccine.
Causes & risk factors
- Mumps virus
- Spread through saliva, coughs and sneezes
- Sharing utensils or close contact
- Being unvaccinated
- Crowded settings like schools and hostels
Common symptoms
- Painful, swollen glands near the jaw/cheeks
- Fever
- Headache
- Tiredness
- Pain when chewing or swallowing
Tests & diagnosis
- Usually diagnosed by the typical swelling
- Mumps antibody/PCR test
- Saliva or urine sample
- Full blood count if unwell
Treatment & management
- Rest and plenty of fluids
- Paracetamol for pain and fever
- Warm or cold packs on the swollen glands
- Soft foods to make eating easier
- Vaccination (MMR) prevents it
When to see a doctor urgently
- Severe headache, stiff neck or drowsiness — urgent care
- Severe abdominal pain or, in men, painful swollen testicles
- A very high fever or being very unwell
- Symptoms not improving after about a week
