Chickenpox
Chickenpox is a common, very contagious viral infection that causes an itchy, blistering rash and fever. It is usually mild in children but can be more serious in adults.
Causes & risk factors
- Varicella-zoster virus
- Spread through coughs, sneezes and contact with blisters
- Very contagious before the rash and until blisters crust
- Being unvaccinated and not previously infected
- Close contact in homes and schools

Treatment & management
- Rest, fluids and paracetamol for fever
- Calamine lotion and cool baths to ease itching
- Keeping nails short to avoid scratching
- Antivirals for adults or high-risk people
- Staying away from others until blisters crust over

- Blisters that become hot, red and painful (skin infection)
- Difficulty breathing, chest pain or drowsiness — urgent care
- Chickenpox in pregnancy, newborns or weak immunity — seek advice fast
- A very high fever or the person becoming very unwell

Can you get chickenpox twice?
It is uncommon, as most people become immune after one infection. The same virus can later cause shingles, though.
