Type-2 diabetes rarely announces itself. In most people it builds quietly for years, and by the time the classic symptoms appear, blood sugar has often been high for a long time. That silent window is exactly why India now has one of the largest diabetic populations in the world — and why knowing the early signs matters so much.
The signs that are easy to brush off
None of these prove you have diabetes, but together they are worth a blood test:
- Passing urine more often, especially at night. Excess sugar pulls water
into the urine.
- Feeling thirsty all the time — the body's response to that fluid loss.
- Unusual tiredness that rest doesn't fix, because cells aren't getting fuel
efficiently.
- Slow-healing cuts, or frequent skin, gum or urinary infections.
- Blurred vision that comes and goes.
- Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet.
- Losing weight without trying — a later, more serious sign.
Many people put these down to "getting older", a busy life, or the heat. That's the trap.
Who should get tested — even with no symptoms
Type-2 diabetes can exist for years with no symptoms at all. Consider a fasting blood sugar and HbA1c test if you are:
- Over 40 (earlier in India, where risk starts younger)
- Overweight, or carry weight around the waist
- Have a parent or sibling with diabetes
- Had diabetes in pregnancy, or a large baby
- Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
What the numbers mean
Doctors usually confirm diabetes with two simple blood tests:
- Fasting blood glucose — after not eating for 8 hours.
- HbA1c — your average blood sugar over about 3 months.
Results in the "prediabetes" range are a warning, not a sentence. This is the stage where lifestyle changes can genuinely turn things around.
The good news: early type-2 diabetes responds to change
Caught early, type-2 diabetes is one of the most modifiable chronic conditions there is. A combination of a balanced diet (less refined carbohydrate and sugar), regular walking or exercise, weight loss where needed, and — when a doctor advises it — medication, can keep blood sugar well controlled and prevent complications to the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.
When to see a doctor urgently
Seek care quickly if you have very high thirst and urination with confusion, drowsiness, fruity-smelling breath, breathlessness, or persistent vomiting — these can signal dangerously high blood sugar.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have diabetes with no symptoms? Yes — very commonly. Type-2 diabetes can be silent for years, which is why screening from your 40s (or earlier with risk factors) is important.
Is prediabetes reversible? For many people, yes. Diet, activity and weight loss at the prediabetes stage can bring blood sugar back to normal and delay or prevent diabetes.
How is diabetes diagnosed? Through blood tests — usually fasting glucose and HbA1c. A doctor interprets them together, sometimes with a post-meal reading.
