How it works
Normal body temperature is about 36.1 to 37.2 °C (97 to 99 °F). A fever is 38.0 °C (100.4 °F) or higher. °F is converted with °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9.
Older children and adults: 39.5 °C or more is called a high fever here, so see a doctor today. 40 °C (104 °F) or more, or below 35 °C (95 °F), needs urgent care.
Young children: the NICE NG143 traffic-light guidance treats any fever of 38 °C or more in a baby under 3 months as a red (urgent) sign, and 39 °C or more in a baby aged 3 to 6 months as an amber sign. This checker uses 39 °C for "see a doctor today" from 3 months to 3 years.
Danger signs such as a stiff neck, a rash that does not fade, a fit, confusion or difficulty breathing mean emergency care, whatever the number.

Frequently asked questions
What temperature is a fever?
A temperature of 38.0 °C (100.4 °F) or higher is usually called a fever. Up to about 37.2 °C is normal, and 37.3 to 37.9 °C is slightly raised.
When is a fever dangerous in a baby?
Any temperature of 38 °C or higher in a baby under 3 months needs a doctor urgently. Older babies and children need urgent care if they have danger signs such as a stiff neck, a rash that does not fade, a fit, difficulty breathing, or are very hard to wake.
Is 39 °C a high fever for an adult?
39 °C is a moderate fever. Rest, fluids and paracetamol usually help. See a doctor if it reaches 39.5 °C or more, lasts more than 3 days, or you feel very unwell.
Should I use °C or °F?
Either works. Many thermometers in India show °F. The checker converts between them: 100.4 °F is the same as 38.0 °C.
